Femtosecond Laser System for Imaging and Dynamics

The laser system will primarily be used for the following purpoeses:
(i) to trigger plasma formation in a variety of target materials, including biological samples like single virus particles, cells, or macromolecules,
(ii) to perform pump-probe experiments on rapidly evolving plasmas, and
(iii) to establish a femtosecond imaging capability to develop procedures for experiments at large X-ray free-electron lasers (FEL), this requires using the laser to drive high-harmonic generation (HHG). Other applications will also be pursued, e.g. the development of new instrumentation for FEL facilities, and testing such instruments before delivery.
